About this event
A Japanese Noh-inspired space odyssey about immigration and long-distance relationships. Booba moves to the Moon for an internship. Will her love for Homie survive?

BOOBA begins like a toy spaceship cartoon: funny, sweet, and a little bit cringe. Booba, a self-proclaimed loser from Mars, lands an internship on the Moon—wide-eyed, hopeful, and desperate to reunite with her long-distance boyfriend, Homie.

The Moon, post-Earth-collapse, is a glossy sanctuary for the elite. Mars is for the weirdos, the leftovers. Booba doesn’t mind. She wants a fresh start. She dreams in emojis. Her problems are small. Until they aren’t.

Halfway through the play, a shocking reveal ruptures her pastel delusion—and forces Booba to grow up fast. Suddenly, the internship isn’t just unpaid; it’s exploitative. The bureaucracy isn’t just absurd; it’s violent. And Homie? He’s not who she thought he was.

What begins as a surreal coming-of-age comedy spirals into a deeper reckoning with trauma, betrayal, and the price of survival. Through underground tunnels and lunar checkpoints, Booba’s journey becomes one of rupture and reassembly. The love story falters. Something darker takes root.

Inspired by Noh theatre, a Japanese dramatic form where ghosts return to relive unresolved trauma. Like Noh, BOOBA is haunted—by memory, by love, by what was left unsaid.

The set features glowing, otherworldly lamp-creatures by Lottie World—a genre-defying pop producer and visual artist from Sydney’s underground scene. Best known for her glitchy, hyperpop-inflected tracks and surreal, DIY aesthetics, Lottie’s world is equal parts cute and uncanny—where cartoon softness meets emotional rawness.

Her sculptures channel the same chaotic tenderness: playful, handmade, and haunted by feeling. In BOOBA, they take on a ghost-like presence, flickering between furniture and spirit.

The production features a live ambient soundtrack by Umki, a multidisciplinary artist based on Ngunnawal and Ngambri land (Canberra), known for blending post-club textures with ceremonial performance.
