About this event
The gentleman adventurer and rakish raconteur returns with an astonishing tale of derring-do (and don'ts!), that puts the cad back in cadaver.

Hearts will flutter. Monocles will plummet. Corsets may become strained. Combining the finest elements of a Sherlock Holmes novel, an Oscar Wilde soirée, and the best night between the sheets you've ever had, The Cadaver Palaver is a ripping yarn, sumptuously told by a master storyteller.

Recently escaped from a makeshift prison in Kandahar, in need of funds, and and trying to rein in his opium habit to mealtimes only, the belle epoque's bravest, and most under-reported explorer arrives in London, only to become embroiled in yet another sinister plot: this time involving the Egyptomania craze sweeping through Britain.

His old mentor, the indomitable Cobden Gack, has gone missing, leaving a slew of corpses in his wake. Following the trail to the malignant labyrinth that is Edinburgh, Sullivan must turn to an old friend, and one of the preeminent surgeons of his day, for help. Cheating death on countless occasions, he stumbles upon a hedonistic Cult of Osiris, unearthing a conspiracy that links modern medicine, exotic mysticism, and the commerce of Empire – but can he escape the wrath of the Mummy’s curse?

Bennett Cooper Sullivan is the alter-ego of Christopher Samuel Carroll, an actor, director, and playwright from Ireland, trained at Trinity College Dublin and Ecole Jacques Lecoq, Paris. Since moving to Canberra in 2016, he has become one of its most prolific and celebrated theatre artists. He recently appeared in Clockfire Theatre Co.'s fantastically fishy fable Plenty of Fish in the Sea, which won Best in Theatre, Best in Physical Theatre, and the Festival Director's Award at Sydney Fringe 2023, and Best in Physical Theatre for a second time in 2024. The Cadaver Palaver will make its Sydney premiere following seasons at Adelaide Fringe, The Butterfly Club, Melbourne, Edinburgh Fringe and Canberra Theatre Centre.

Reviews

"A master of his craft... ‘master’ is almost an understatement." ★★★★1/2 The Barefoot Review

"The sequel is worth the wait...part detective mystery, part adventure at the edge of known science, and with more than enough comedy asides and sexual innuendo to warrant a second listen." Stage Whispers

"This character he's created has such a genuine realness to him that I found myself being really invested in the story.... Literally, it's so stupid to say, through the power of his acting and simply telling a story that is genuinely well-written, he transported us there." Praise Dionysus
